I really liked the canon bits and then the added information like Lucius' desire for Snape to teach potions and how Snape became Head of Slytherin at such a young age.

The connection to alchemy came from Nicholas Flamel (of course), and the connection between alchemy as it was practiced and the art of Potions that Snape teaches.
I love playing with canon and trying to imagine the "bits between"; Lucius does seem to have given Snape some support (moral, mentor, etc) over the years.
